Three Dead in Tragic Road Crash on Mbarara-Bushenyi Road

Three people have died in a road crash that occurred today, November 4, 2024, at 7:35 a.m. at Mile 9 along the Mbarara-Bushenyi road. The crash involved a Toyota Hiace with registration number UBK 951Q, a Toyota Grand Mark II with registration number UAX 318V, and another vehicle with registration number UAZ 899J.

SP Kananura Michael, the CLO of the Directorate of Traffic, stated that the incident happened when the driver of the Mark II, traveling from Bushenyi towards Mbarara, lost control while trying to avoid a pothole. The vehicle collided with an oncoming Toyota Wish, instantly killing two people, including the driver and a passenger of the Mark II, and injuring seven others, all of whom were occupants of the Toyota Wish.

Shortly after, a secondary incident occurred when a speeding Toyota Hiace from the Bushenyi direction struck and killed one of the crash victims as they were being removed from the scene. The driver of the Hiace failed to stop but was later intercepted at a police checkpoint in Mbarara.

Kananura reported that police responded immediately, rushing the injured victims to Mbarara Referral Hospital, while the bodies were taken to the mortuary for postmortem examination. The vehicles involved in the crash were towed to Kashaka Police Station for inspection.

The preliminary cause of the accident is attributed to overspeeding and the presence of a pothole in the middle of the road.
