Senior three student’s head blown off in an explosion while brewing waragi

One person is dead and two others have been injured during an alcohol distilling incident in Kanungu district.

The deceased is Emmanuel Akankunda a 20-year old S 3 student of Nyakinoni SS in Nyakinoni sub-county and resident of the same address. The injured have been identified as Flavia Bikorwomuhangi 53 years his mother and her other 16 years old son only identified as Tukasingura.

According to Elly Maate the Kigezi regional PRO, it is alleged that on 20/04/2022 at around 1300hrs at Hakibungo cell Western ward Nyamirama town council in Kanungu district, the three family members were distilling local brew (waragi) at Ahalindi stream, when suddenly the drum burst, blowing off the top cover and crude waragi burnt Emmanuel to death.

Maate says the deceased’s head was shattered into pieces while his mother and young brother were injured seriously.

Police were notified, and officers led by OC Nyamirama police station visited the scene, recovered the body, and conveyed it to Nyamirama health centre 1V mortuary for postmortem.

The other two victims are receiving treatment at the same medical facility.
