IGP Condemns Killing of Police Officer in Ibanda

The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has condemned the killing of a police officer by a mob.

The officer, 28-year-old PC Chemonges Suleiman, was attacked and killed while on duty at a funeral in Ibanda District. He was guarding the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus, a prisoner who had died in Nyabuhikye Government Prison.

According to SP Kasasira Samson, the police spokesperson for Rwizi, the mob was made up of people believed to be relatives of the dead prisoner. They blamed the police for Kahangire’s death in custody.

Police arrived at the scene and recovered a gun and 16 bullets. PC Suleiman’s body was taken to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary.

Investigations are still going on.

“All those involved in this terrible act will be arrested and punished,” said Kasasira.
