Fishermen in trouble for strangling UPDF Fisheries soldier to death
The military have launched a hunt for two fishermen who killed a UPDF soldier belonging to the Fisheries Protection Unit. The incident happened in Kyanjazi near Busia.
Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso the UPDF spokesperson told the media in Kampala this morning, that the incident happened on 14th July 2021, when two soldiers who were conducting routine patrol on L.Victoria intercepted two boats that were suspected to be involved in illegal fishing.
The duo apprehended occupants of the boats and in the process of changing the suspects into the marine boats, one of them dived into the water, forcing one of the soldiers to follow suit in order to rescue him.
However, the other suspects took advantage and sped off with the second soldier on the boat to unknown destination. UPDF launched rescue operations but efforts to find him were futile on that day.
His body was discovered the following day, on July 15th with strangulation marks. His legs had also been broken.
The suspects have been identified as Byakutaaga Augustine and Ruhinda Charles who are still on the run. However, Byekwaso says one other suspect whose name has been withheld, is in custody.
Efforts are now underway, to bring Byakutaaga and Ruhinda to book. Byekwaso noted that such incidents will not stop soldiers from doing their work. Adding that they will bounty on the suspects to ensure they are caufgt.
