Driver abandons vehicle after killing two children on Hoima-Fort portal road

On Thursday, a speeding vehicle struck and killed two children on Hoima-Fort portal Road at Mairirwe trading center.

The minors have been identified as Bridget Atuhairwe, 9, and Trevor Murungi, 14, both residents of Kibararu village in Buhimba Sub County.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the children were riding on a bicycle when a vehicle with the registration UBM 463G crashed into them, resulting in their immediate demise.

Amon Byaruhanga, the Chairperson of Mairirwe Local Council (LCI), revealed that the driver of the vehicle was travelling at an excessive speed when the tragic accident occurred.

The driver then abandoned the vehicle at Kikuube Central Police Station and fled the scene.

Julius Hakiza, the Spokesperson for the Albertine Region Police, noted that preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was a result of the driver’s excessive speed.

Currently, the police are actively searching for the driver, who is currently on the run, in order to bring them to justice.
