Three Geologists, two UPDF soldiers killed by suspected Karamojong Warriors in Moroto
Police in Moroto is investigating circumstances under which suspected Karimojong warriors shot and killed three officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and two UPDF soldiers whose two guns were also stolen by the assailants.
The incident occurred on 21/3/2022 at around 1500/c at Kubebe area, Lokisilei Parish in Lotisan Sub-county Moroto District.
According to AIP Longole Mike the Ag. PRO Mt Moroto, the three officials were identified as Olweny Charles, Musiime Edina and Kigwe Richard all from the Department of Geology and Mineral survey.
However, the two soldiers are yet to be identified.
The five were on a Mineral mapping exercise in the area when the attack happened.
Police are still investigating the killers’ motive.
Postmortem has been done, but the scene of the crime is yet to be revisited by a team of investigators.
Longole promised that other proceedings will be communicated in due course.
“We would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the families of the five deceased bodies for the loss of their dear ones. Joint security forces are committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of this incident are brought to book and two guns added to wrong hands will be recovered,” Longole says.
Several Ugandans in the region have been killed by the Karamojong warriors and several animals including cattle, goats and sheep raided. The joint security forces have been deployed in the region with an aim of securing the natives and their properties.
Last week security forces recovered 8 guns and 37 ammunition, while 16 warriors were put out of action. They also arrested 56, while out of the 372 cows that were raided, 245 were recovered. Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga says they were also able to recover 607 out of the 620 goats and sheep that had been raided.
