Bishop Ssemogerere appointed Archbishop for Kampala, 8 months after Dr. Lwanga’s death
Bishop of Kasana-Luwero Diocese, Paul Ssemogerere has been named the new Archbishop of Kampala, replacing Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who passed eight months ago.
The Papal Nuncio to Uganda, Archbishop Luigi Bianco made the announcement during a press conference in Kampala on Thursday.
Ssemogerere has been Bishop of Kasana-Luwero Diocese, but also Apostolic Administrator for Kampala Archdiocese a position he was appointed to on April 8, 2021, following Dr. Lwanga’s death.
Lubaga Cathedral Administrators broke the news on social media earlier today, indicating that the Holy Father Pope Francis Has appointed Bishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kasana luweero diocese the new Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese. “Congratulations Archbishop,” they wrote.
About Bishop Ssemogerere
He was born June 30, 1956, at Kisubi, in the present-day Wakiso District, and attended Kigero Primary School before transferring to Kisubi Boys Primary School.
He also attended St. Maria Goretti Senior Secondary School Katende, where he completed his ordinary level studies.
Bishop Ssemogerere together with seven other young men became pioneer students of St. Mbaaga Seminary at Ggaba in 1976.
In 1978, the late Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga sent Ssemogerere to the Saint Francis de Sales Seminary, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the United States, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity degree in 1982.
He was ordained a deacon by Archbishop Rembert George Weakland, the Archbishop of Milwaukee On November 21, 1981. Ssemogerere was later ordained a priest on 3 June 1983 at Kampala, by Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga, Archbishop of Kampala. He served as a priest in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kampala, until 4 June 2008, when he was appointed bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luweero.
On 23 August 2008 he was consecrated as bishop by Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Archbishop of Kampala, assisted by Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, Cardinal-Priest of Sant’Ugo, and Cardinal Emeritus of Kampala and Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam, Titular Archbishop of Amantia and Papal Nuncio to Uganda at that time at Kasana-Luweero.
On Thursday 8 April 2021, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Kampala archdiocese by Pope Francis after the sudden death of Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga until today when he got elevated to Archibishop of Kampala Archdiocese by Pope Francis.
