Horror in Rubirizi district, as two children, drown in abandoned mines

A dark cloud has covered Rutondo cell in Kyabakara Sub County, Rubirizi district after two children drowned in abandoned mines.

The victims have been identified as; 15-year-old Agnes Tumukunde and 14-year-old Gift Kyoshabire, both pupils of Nyakaramibi Primary school and residents of Rutondo cell in Kyabakara Sub County.

The incident happened on Sunday when the children were collecting papyrus to make crafts. According to James Mushabe, the Rutondo cell LC 1 Chairperson, they heard screams from a girl he only identifies as Nabaasa who survived drowning.

However, by the time they reached the mines the other two children had already died.

Area leaders say the Chinese who were exploring for gold in the area left the mines open. The mines, which are close to Buhindagyi stream are filled with water whenever it rains heavily.

Harriet Nakamya the Rubirizi District Resident Commissioner says that incidents of drowning in the district are common in both young and old people, explaining that they have so far lost six people to drowning.

According to Martial Tumusiime the Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, they have commenced investigations, while deceased’s bodies have been handed over to their parents.
