Kyagulanyi welcomes US visa restrictions on Ugandan Government Officials
The National Unity Platform, NUP Party President Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert has issued a statement supporting the announcement of visa restrictions by US Secretary of State, on Ugandan officials who illegally interfered with the recent election, rendering it neither free nor fair.
Kyagulanyi in his statement noted that the people of Uganda appreciate U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s announcement of visa restrictions on Ugandan officials who interfered with the recent elections. Adding that the statement by the United States is an important recognition that the recent elections were neither free nor fair.
“It sends an unequivocal message that although Gen. Museveni boasts of controlling all Ugandan institutions that would call him to account, the world is watching and is beginning to act. The victims of the worst human rights violations which we have witnessed, including families of hundreds of Ugandans murdered on Gen. Museveni’s orders; thousands of victims of abductions and torture, as well as those who are still under illegal detention have received this news with gratitude” Kyagulanyi writes.
Kyagulanyi who came second in the January 14th 2021 Presidential election said that the people of Uganda value their relationship with the global community and appreciate the concern shown by the United States on the deteriorating situation regarding human rights and civil liberties.
“It is our hope that other nations of the world will follow suit and support the people of Uganda in our quest for freedom and democracy” Kyagulanyi noted.
On Friday, Antony Blinken announced that they were imposing visa restrictions on those involved in undermining Democracy here in Uganda.
“There are consequences for interfering in the democratic process. Starting today, we are imposing visa restrictions on those involved in undermining democracy in Uganda” Blinken wrote.
However, President Yoweri Museveni wrote to the US over the weekend, responding to the issues pointed out in the human rights report, noting that most of the issues raised were baseless and hearsay.
