40 being held at Nalufenya for defying Curfew Guidelines in Jinja City
At least 40 people are in custody at Nalufenya Police Station following their arrest by Police in Jinja City for violating the 9:00 pm night curfew.
According to Maurice Niyonzima the Acting Jinja Central Police Commander, the suspects were arrested on Tuesday night from the suburbs of Budhumbuli and Wanyama in Bugembe ward, Jinja City for operating shops and street vending beyond 9:00pm.
One of the area residents says that several cases of theft were being recorded during curfew time, prompting residents to alert police.
Niyonzima says that the operation which started at 11:00 pm to 4:00 resulted from endless complaints by the residents, who accused some members of the business community of not adhering to the curfew restrictions which had, in turn, caused cases of insecurity.
He noted that the suspects’ file has been processed and forwarded to the state attorney for legal advice.
