URA, Security Agencies Impound 42 Motorcycles in Anti-Smuggling Operation at Elegu Border
The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Elegu branch, in coordination with other border security enforcement agencies, conducted a disruptive intelligence-led operation on August 6, 2025, targeting rampant smuggling activities along the Uganda–South Sudan border at Elegu.
The operation focused on motorcycles suspected of being used in smuggling, particularly those without number plates, with forged registration, or registered in South Sudan.
According to ASP Ongom David Mudong, the Public Relations Officer for ASWA West, a total of 42 motorcycles were impounded during the operation. These included:
- 3 numberless motorcycles
- 1 motorcycle with suspected forged Ugandan number plates
- 38 motorcycles registered in South Sudan
Owners of the impounded motorcycles have been advised to report to the URA offices in Elegu with valid proof of ownership for verification before their motorcycles can be returned.
Authorities say the operation is part of ongoing efforts to tighten border security and curb illegal trade and smuggling in the region.
