UPDF, Police Launch Operation to Enforce Traffic Discipline in Kampala

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has clarified the ongoing deployment of Military Police at road checkpoints across the Kampala Metropolitan Area, stating that the operation is aimed at restoring order and enforcing traffic regulations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, Colonel Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, said the UPDF Military Police Brigade is conducting the operation in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force.

According to the statement, the operation, which became effective on Monday, 9 March 2026, seeks to restore discipline on Ugandan roads by ensuring full compliance with traffic regulations among all motorists. Authorities are also targeting unregistered or numberless vehicles and addressing the illegal use of sirens, among other traffic-related offences.

The UPDF dismissed claims circulating in some quarters that the sudden checkpoints mounted by Military Police and the Traffic Police were intended to apprehend Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

Colonel Magezi said the enforcement measures are not targeted at any individual but are part of routine efforts to promote road safety and curb criminal activities committed by some motorists.

“No one is looking for or interested in the NUP leader. The aim of the security forces is to restore discipline, ensure total observance of traffic regulations, and curtail criminal activities by some motorists on the roads,” the statement noted.

He added that similar enforcement operations have been conducted in the past to achieve the same objectives.

Motorists, including motorcyclists, have been urged to cooperate with directives issued by the Military Police and Traffic Police officers deployed at checkpoints for the benefit of public safety.
