Uganda Martyrs Day to Be Marked in Parishes Amid Ebola Concerns

The Uganda Episcopal Conference has announced that Catholic faithful across the country will commemorate the Uganda Martyrs Feast Day on 3rd June 2026 at parish and diocesan levels following the postponement of the national celebrations at Namugongo.

In a press release, Bishop Anthony Zziwa, the chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, encouraged Catholics to gather in their respective parishes and mark the occasion under the guidance of their bishops.

The development follows a government announcement postponing the National Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo due to the Ebola outbreak in the country.

On Sunday evening, President Yoweri Museveni announced the postponement of the annual religious celebration, which is traditionally held on 3rd June, citing public health concerns arising from the outbreak.

Addressing the media in Kampala this afternoon, Bishop Zziwa said the bishops had issued pastoral guidance to Catholic faithful to ensure the important occasion is observed prayerfully and meaningfully.

“The commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs remains a profound witness of faith, courage, fidelity to Christ, and a steadfast commitment to Christian values,” Bishop Zziwa said.

He added that although the national gathering at Namugongo has been postponed, dioceses and parishes are encouraged to celebrate the day in consultation with diocesan bishops and relevant government authorities.

“Let us all join in prayers for our nation, health workers, and all those affected by the circumstances that necessitated the postponement,” he added.

The Conference of Bishops also urged the faithful to adhere to guidelines issued by the government and the Ministry of Health and called upon media institutions to provide responsible and adequate coverage of the Ebola outbreak.

“As shepherds of God’s people, we invite all the faithful to remain calm, prayerful, united, and hopeful. The witness of the Uganda Martyrs continues to inspire the Church and the nation, reminding us that true faith is lived daily through love, sacrifice, truth, and fidelity to God. May the Holy Martyrs of Uganda intercede for our nation and strengthen us in faith and unity,” the statement reads.
