Uganda, China Strengthen Ties as Investors Target Key Sectors

Uganda is positioning itself as one of Africa’s hottest investment destinations, with a new wave of Chinese investors exploring opportunities in key sectors of the economy.

A high-level Chinese delegation, facilitated by Uganda’s Embassy in Beijing under Ambassador Oliver Wonekha, is in Kampala to explore projects in agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, infrastructure, and renewable energy. The visit comes on the heels of Uganda’s recognition as the Best Investment Destination in Africa 2024 and record foreign direct investment of $3.034 billion last fiscal year.

Speaking on behalf of the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), Mr. Peter Muramira said Uganda is focusing on fast-growth areas such as bamboo plantations for renewable energy, industrial park development, and technical training programs to build a skilled workforce. He also revealed that Uganda’s exports to China jumped by 127% between February 2024 and February 2025 — a sign of shifting trade dynamics.

The Chinese business mission is led by Mr. Diao Chunhe, Chairman of the Alliance of Chinese Business in Africa for Social Responsibilities, who praised Uganda’s business-friendly environment and pledged stronger cooperation. He cited landmark projects like the Karuma Hydropower Plant and Buikwe Water Supply Project as proof of China-Uganda collaboration delivering results.

Mr. Wang Jianxun, Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, reaffirmed China’s commitment to encouraging responsible enterprises to invest, noting the two nations’ partnership dates back to 1962.

Uganda, through Vision 2040 and the Fourth National Development Plan, is betting on agriculture, energy, industrialization, and digital transformation to accelerate growth. With China’s renewed interest, officials say the partnership is expected to bring jobs, technology transfer, and new markets for Ugandan products.

This latest engagement marks a new chapter in the Uganda-China relationship, as the two nations push for sustainable and mutually beneficial economic growth.
