Uganda, Algeria Sign Cooperation Agreement to Boost Health Infrastructure

Algiers, Algeria – Uganda’s Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Matia Kasaija, has signed a cooperation agreement with his Algerian counterpart, Abdelkarim Bouzred, aimed at supporting development projects in Uganda.

The agreement, signed under the Algerian International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development Agency, will see Algeria finance the expansion and rehabilitation of Katakwi General Hospital with a grant of USD 13.7 million (about UGX 50 billion).

Minister Kasaija, who signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Uganda, hailed the development as a milestone in the growing partnership between Uganda and Algeria.

“This project will significantly transform health care delivery for Katakwi and the neighboring districts, benefiting over half a million people, not only for today, but for generations to come,” said Kasaija.

He explained that the upgraded hospital will ease access to specialized care and reduce the financial and social burden on families who currently travel long distances for medical services. The facility is also expected to decongest regional referral hospitals and strengthen Uganda’s health system, particularly through improved infrastructure and human resource development.

Kasaija further requested that the second phase of the project consider the construction of additional modern wards, provision of advanced medical equipment, and training of health workers to enhance service delivery.

On his part, Minister Bouzred praised the bilateral ties between the two countries and pledged Algeria’s full commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the agreement.

The partnership marks another step in the deepening of diplomatic and development cooperation between Uganda and Algeria.
