Two Women Die as Fire Guts Makeshift Houses in Kikaaya
Two people have been confirmed dead and a four-month-old baby injured following a fire that gutted a makeshift residential structure in Kikaaya Zone, Kawempe Division, Kampala District.
The incident occurred on January 22, 2026, at about 9:00 p.m.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the deceased have been identified as Kobusingye Monica, 21, a businesswoman, and another woman identified only as Mulokole. Both were residents of Kikaaya Zone.
The injured victim is a four-month-old baby girl, the daughter of Kobusingye Monica.
Preliminary police findings indicate that the fire started in a makeshift house belonging to a man identified as Edgar before spreading to neighbouring structures. The affected houses were largely constructed using wooden poles and old iron sheets, which enabled the fire to spread rapidly.
Residents in neighbouring houses managed to escape by climbing over a nearby wall fence. However, the two victims were unable to get out. Police report that while trapped, Kobusingye managed to throw her baby outside the burning house. The infant was rescued by residents and rushed to Span Medical Centre in Kisaasi after sustaining burn injuries.
Police were alerted, and the Fire and Rescue Brigade responded and successfully extinguished the fire.
The burnt bodies of the two women were recovered from the scene and conveyed to KCCA Mortuary at Mulago for post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.
