Two buried by sand in Kanungu District

Two people lost their lives in Kanungu district after being buried under a heap of sand.

The deceased have been identified as Mugarura Anaklet, a 20-year-old resident of Kanyamisinga LC1, Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, Kanungu District, and Niwamanya Barnet, a resident of Kiijanga cell, Rutugunda Parish, Kirima Sub County, Kanungu District.

According to Maate Elly, the PRO for the Kigezi Region, the incident occurred on 08/02/2024, at 1500hrs, at a sand quarry located at Kanyamisinga LC1, Nyakishojwa Parish, Katete Sub County, Kanungu District.

The unfortunate event unfolded while the duo was engaged in loading sand onto a tipper lorry, and the sand unexpectedly shifted, trapping them as they tried to flee. Despite efforts by local residents to rescue them, both men succumbed to suffocation.

A team led by the Officer in Charge (OC) of Kihihi Police Station, Asp Tumukunde, along with Deputy Inspector of Police (D/IP) Tuheibwe Erasmus, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), Homicide detectives, and armed personnel, promptly responded to the scene.

Statements were recorded from eyewitnesses, and the bodies of the victims were recovered and transported to Kambuga Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination
