Terror in Kamwenge: unidentified assailants leave 10 Dead

Security forces are in pursuit of unidentified assailants believed to be ADF rebels, following an attack at 02:00 hrs on December 19, 2023. The incident occurred in Kyitehurizi village, Kyabandara parish, Kamwenge sub-county, Kamwenge District, resulting in the death of 10 people.

Among the deceased, Banyazaki Margaret, aged 60, and another victim identified as Tugume, a 25-year-old, have been named, while the identities of the remaining eight victims are yet to be established.

According to SP Twesige Vicent, the Public Relations Officer for the Rwenzori West Region, preliminary investigations suggest that around ten assailants armed with SMG rifles carried out the attack. The assailants targeted Kyitehurizi trading center in Kyabandara parish, Kamwenge sub-county, situated in proximity to Kibale National Park, where they mercilessly killed 10 individuals.

The attackers raided the store of Baguma Richard, 35 years old, making off with 300 kgs of beans, a sack of Irish potatoes, 03 trays of eggs, and 50 kgs of maize.

After committing the heinous act, the assailants set ablaze a motorcycle Reg. No UFC 851T. Following the incident, they fled in the direction of Kibale National Park.

Police officers, accompanied by canine units and UPDF personnel, rushed to the scene.

Twesige says a manhunt, led by Joint Security Agencies, is currently underway.
