Six Injured in Cooking Gas Explosion at Banda Hostel

Six people were injured on Monday evening after a cooking gas cylinder exploded at Sports Pro Hostel in Banda Zone 9, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.

The incident occurred at around 5:40 PM on August 25, 2025, damaging the ground floor of the three-storey building and shattering windows and doors.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango, the hostel’s security guard, identified as Frank, sustained serious injuries and was first treated at a local clinic before being transferred to Naguru Hospital.

Five Kyambogo University students were also injured in the blast. They include Chelangat Flavia, Akello Florence, and three others whose identities are yet to be confirmed. The victims were rushed to Naguru and Mulago Hospitals for further treatment.

Police officers responded swiftly to the scene, cordoned off the area, and launched an investigation.

“The cause of the explosion has been confirmed as a cooking gas cylinder. It is crucial to handle gas cylinders with care and follow safety guidelines to prevent such incidents,” Onyango said.
