The police in Amudat are investigating the circumstances under which Tibita John, a casual worker at Evergrand Resource Company LTD and resident of Cheptakol Village, Lokaales Subcounty in Amudat District, lost his life while on duty on November 20, 2024, at around 11:30 a.m.

Evergrand Resource Company LTD is a gold mining company based in Chepkararat, Lokaales Subcounty, Amudat District.

According to IP Longole Mike, the Acting Public Relations Officer for Mt. Moroto/ASTU, it is alleged that the deceased was on a lift ascending from the mining tunnel when a falling stone cut the lift’s wires. This caused the lift to fail, and Tibita fell approximately 50 meters back into the tunnel. He was retrieved unconscious and rushed to Karita Health Centre IV, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Regional Police Commander for Mt. Moroto and a team of detectives visited the scene, recorded statements from eyewitnesses, and initiated an investigation. The body of the deceased was taken to Mbale City mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The police also held a crisis meeting with the management of Evergrand Resource Company LTD. They advised the company to suspend operations for at least ten days to implement safety measures that ensure the well-being of workers.

This is the second fatal incident reported at the company within two days. On November 18, 2024, Mogomu Baker, another casual worker, was crushed by a conveyor machine.
