Rwandan national lynched during robbery incident in Kabale

Police in Kabale are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Elias Twizeye, a Rwandan national who worked as a casual laborer and resided in Kirisa village, Nyombe parish, Kahungye sub-county in Kabale district.

According to Elly Maate, the PRO Kigezi Police Region, the investigation follows a report received by the Officer in Charge (OC) of Kahungye Police Post from Kabemera Sunday, the chairman of Nyombe village.

On the night of 25/03/2024 at around 02:00 hours, Kabemera Sunday reported that unknown individuals had forcefully entered a shop owned by Tugyendenawe Michael in Nyombe trading center and were in the process of stealing items.

The shop owner made an alarm which attracted local residents and they attempted to apprehend the thieves. However, the thieves resisted, resulting in one of them escaping while the other was lynched by the residents.

The incident was reported at Kahungye Police Post, prompting the OC to rush to the crime scene. Upon arrival, the OC discovered that Elias Twizeye had already died. The DCID Officer in Kabale was immediately notified of the situation.

A team of officers from Kabale visited the scene and conducted a thorough documentation process. Maate stated that witness statements were obtained, confirming the identity of the deceased as Twizeye Elias, who worked as a casual laborer at the residence of the late Ndagijimana in Kinisa village, Nyombe parish, Kahungye sub-county in Kabale district.

Twizeye’s body was transported to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Investigations are ongoing, with efforts being made to apprehend those involved in the incident for prosecution in the courts of law.
