President Museveni Meets Deputy Speaker Tayebwa’s Family in Mitooma
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni met with the family of the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, in Nyamiyaga, Bitereko, Ruhinda-Mitooma District on Sunday. The meeting took place during a thanksgiving ceremony for Mzee Daudi Bangirana, Rt. Hon. Tayebwa’s father, who was celebrating his 80th birthday and 48 years of marriage.
During the meeting, President Museveni commended Mzee Bangirana for his hard work and for educating his children, who have become responsible citizens. The President gifted Mzee Bangirana with five Friesian cows.
Following the family meeting, President Museveni addressed a rally at Rwakitandara Playground, where he spoke to the residents of Mitooma. He cautioned against identity politics based on religion and tribe, emphasizing that it undermines the prosperity of Ugandans.
He highlighted the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government’s focus on addressing citizens’ problems since coming to power in 1986, mentioning initiatives like immunization, Universal Primary and Secondary Education (UPE/USE), and security improvements.
The President also warned head teachers in government schools against charging fees, which he said causes children from poor families to drop out. He emphasized the government’s efforts to ensure all Ugandans can participate in the money economy and urged the people of Mitooma to adopt the four-acre model of farming to improve their livelihoods.
The model includes growing coffee, fruits, practicing zero grazing, and cultivating food crops, with additional activities like poultry, piggery, and fish farming.
President Museveni encouraged the use of modern farming methods, such as irrigation, to increase productivity. He also advised against land fragmentation, suggesting that family members share profits rather than dividing land into smaller plots.
Additionally, President Museveni reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption, warning accounting officers to be vigilant and accountable for their actions.
Earlier, a new church, St. Karoli Lwanga in Kigarama Catholic Parish Bitereko, was commissioned. The church was constructed by Rt. Hon. Tayebwa in honor of his late grandmother, Julita Kaijarubi Tiruhongyerwa. The Deputy Speaker praised his late grandmother, who raised him from the age of six, for her love and spiritual guidance. He credited her for instilling in him values of spirituality, hard work, and education.
The ceremony was attended by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Anita Among, former Prime Ministers Rt. Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda and Rt. Hon. Amama Mbabazi, ministers, members of parliament, members of the diplomatic corps, business people, and other dignitaries.
