Police Warn Politicians Over Traffic Chaos During Nominations
The Kampala Metropolitan Police have expressed concern over the continued disregard for traffic regulations by politicians and their supporters during nomination exercises.
On Friday, a convoy led by Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago concluded his nomination exercise in Ntinda without incident. However, on his return, a motorcycle fitted with a loudspeaker mobilized an estimated 200 riders and 20 vehicles, causing major traffic disruptions. The motorcycle, registration UBE 965R, has since been impounded.
According to police, efforts to restore order included setting up a roadblock at Rubaga. Some riders attempted to evade the checkpoint, leading to a collision between two motorcycles. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the riders dispersed shortly after.
During the incident, some individuals hurled stones at police officers, but the situation was contained without escalation.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy PRO for Kampala Metropolitan Police, urged politicians and their supporters to respect traffic rules and be mindful of other road users and businesses.
“We urge all politicians and supporters to respect traffic laws and consider other road users and businesses. The Uganda Police will continue to monitor and address such incidents to ensure public safety,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Lord Mayor Lukwago was later escorted safely to his home, and normalcy has since been restored.
