Police Say 2025 Christmas Celebrations Passed Peacefully in Kampala

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has reported that the 2025 festive season, particularly Christmas Day and Boxing Day, was generally calm and well-managed across the Kampala Metropolitan Area, with no major security incidents recorded.

Addressing the media on Saturday, the Deputy Regional Police Commander for KMP, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, said the only notable incident occurred in KMP South under Kajjansi Police Division, where a fire outbreak was reported in the early hours of 26 December 2025 at Kitende in Kajjansi Town Council, Wakiso District.

The fire destroyed a six-room residential house occupied by a tenant and her family. All nine occupants safely escaped without sustaining injuries. Owoyesigyire said a team comprising detectives, Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and the Fire Brigade promptly responded, secured the scene and commenced investigations. While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established, preliminary findings point to a suspected electrical fault. Investigations are ongoing.

He further noted that Boxing Day activities across Entebbe Division and other parts of the metropolitan area attracted large crowds. These included music concerts, beach events, entertainment venues and religious gatherings held at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel, Aero Beach, Lido and White Sand beaches, Kitubulu Public Beach, Nkumba and Manyago beaches, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) and Victoria Mall. All events concluded peacefully under close police supervision.

Both overt and covert police officers were deployed along major routes, beaches, landing sites and entertainment venues to ensure public safety. KMP also worked closely with sister security agencies, including the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Aviation Police, whose support enhanced security coverage.

Owoyesigyire reported that only isolated incidents were recorded during the period, including one injury case at Aero Beach, one fatal road accident, one serious accident and four minor accidents. Several suspected phone snatchers were arrested and detained, including a known repeat offender operating in Kisenyi, commonly known as “Makona.” Overall, crime and accident levels were significantly lower compared to previous festive seasons.

He said KMP continues to closely monitor the security situation as the festive season progresses towards the New Year celebrations.

“We assure the public that security remains firmly in place across the metropolitan area. So far, no major incidents have been registered. We thank members of the public for their cooperation and responsible conduct during this festive period,” Owoyesigyire said.
