Police Probe Suspected Murder of Casual Labourer in Rukungiri
Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 38-year-old man who was allegedly assaulted to death by unknown assailants in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The deceased, identified as Okello Dismus, had been employed as a casual labourer for more than two years at the residence of Mrs. Rwemereza Annet in Kyehunde Cell, Bwambara Parish, Bwambara Sub County.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, on Wednesday evening at around 7:00pm, Mrs. Rwemereza left Okello on guard duty, watching over timber piled in her compound. However, on Thursday morning at around 8:00am, she was surprised to find him missing. Shortly afterward, she received information that Okello’s body had been discovered at Omukayaga Cell, near Omukayaga Trading Centre.
“It is suspected that he was murdered by yet-to-be-identified people,” said Maate.
The area chairman, Mr Bazirake Godfrey, was notified of the incident and immediately reported the matter to Bwambara Police Station.
A team of police officers, including a K9 unit, visited the crime scene. However, the dog trail did not yield any leads. Statements were recorded from witnesses, and the body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police have appealed to the public for information that may help in tracking down the perpetrators.
“Anyone with information that can lead police to get the culprits identified should volunteer it so that they are brought to book,” ASP Maate said.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
