Police Issue Traffic Guidelines as Uganda Hosts CHAN 2025

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has announced a series of temporary traffic adjustments in Kampala and Entebbe in preparation for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN 2025). The tournament, which brings together teams and fans from across the continent, will necessitate the re-routing of vehicles to ensure the safe and smooth movement of teams, officials, and guests.

According to a statement issued by SP Michael Kananura, the Uganda Police Force will enforce a Traffic Management Plan throughout the tournament period. This plan affects key routes and locations tied to the event, including stadiums, hotels, training grounds, and surrounding areas.

Affected Areas and Routes

The main route identified for tournament logistics includes the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway – Northern Bypass – Bwaise Interchange.

Other routes expected to experience adjustments include:

  • Kubiri Roundabout – Mulago Traffic Lights – Yusuf Lule Road
  • Kira Road Police Station – Bukoto Road
  • Kalerwe Interchange – Kisasi Roundabout
  • Nalya Interchange – Namboole Interchange, providing access to Mandela National Stadium Annex (Namboole)
  • Busega Roundabout – Natete – Kabusu Traffic Lights, providing access to Wankulukuku Stadium
  • Mulago – Wandegeya – Makerere Hill Road – Nakulabye – Balintuma Road, leading to Kadiba Stadium Mengo
  • Jinja Road Traffic Lights (Punjani) – Jinja Road – Kyambogo Junction – Ministry of Works, for access to Kyambogo University Playground

Diversions and Cutoff Points

Traffic diversions will be activated only when necessary, especially during matches at Namboole Stadium. On match days, these will come into effect from 12:00 PM. Key diversions include:

  • Trucks will be diverted from Kalelwe Interchange via Gayaza–Kalagi–Mukono
  • Additional truck and vehicle diversions will occur at Mukono, Naalya, Seeta, Bweyogerere, and other access points
  • Pedestrian-only zones will be enforced from Kireka–Nasanga Junction to Jokas Hotel Road
  • Kinawataka Road access to Kireka Trading Centre will be cut off at Hared Petrol Station

Parking Restrictions

Only VIP-accredited vehicles with proper stickers will be allowed to park at the Southern Wing of Mandela National Stadium. The public is strongly discouraged from driving to the venue, and advised to make alternative parking or transport arrangements.

Enforcement and Guidance

The Traffic Police will deploy heavily along all designated routes. Convoys will be accompanied by lead vehicles, and all road users are urged to comply with directives from traffic officers.

“We strongly urge all motorists and road users to comply with the instructions, plan journeys early, and exercise maximum discipline and patience,” said SP Kananura. “Your cooperation is vital to the success and safety of this prestigious continental event.”

Key Reminders for Road Users During CHAN 2025:

  • Obey all traffic officer instructions
  • Avoid restricted routes unless officially accredited
  • Refrain from driving to the stadium unless holding a VIP sticker
  • Plan ahead to avoid congestion and delays

The CHAN 2025 tournament is expected to attract thousands of spectators, dignitaries, and media, and the success of the traffic flow plan will be crucial in projecting Uganda as a capable host.
