Police Investigate Suspected Murder of Mother in Rukungiri

Police in Rukiga District are investigating the death of 43-year-old Oliver Mbabazi, a housewife and resident of Rwongora Cell, Kitojo Parish, Rwamucucu Subcounty, whose body was found hanging inside her home.

Authorities say that on 6 December 2025, at around 2 pm, Mbabazi was at home with her two-month-old baby. The following day, at about 7 pm, she was discovered dead, hanging from a piece of cloth (lesu).

According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, a closer examination of the body revealed a fresh, deep wound around the neck, raising suspicion that she may have been killed and her body staged to appear as suicide.

A team of detectives visited, processed, and documented the scene. Statements were taken from key witnesses, and a police canine was deployed, leading to the arrest of one suspect who is now undergoing interrogation.

Police also recovered a knife with suspected blood stains outside the compound.

Mbabazi’s body has been taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
