Police Investigate Separate Arson Incidents in Wakiso and Mukono

Police are investigating two separate arson incidents reported in Wakiso and Mukono districts, both of which occurred in the early hours of 1 January 2026.

In Wakiso District under KMP North, an arson case was reported at Kireka–Bira Village, Nakabugo Parish, Wakiso Sub-county. According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy PRO for Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), the complainant, Natukunda Mercy, reported that on the night of 31 December 2025, she and her husband left their home to attend overnight prayers.

At about 4:00 a.m. on 1 January 2026, neighbours noticed the house engulfed in flames. Although the fire was eventually put out, several household items, including mattresses, clothes, and suitcases, were destroyed. A neighbour reported seeing a woman leaving the scene shortly after the fire started. The woman is suspected of being known to the complainant.

Police visited and documented the scene, arrested a suspect, and recorded statements from witnesses to aid the investigation.

In a separate incident under KMP East in Mukono District, police received a report of arson at Kitega Village. The complainant, Namutebi Ritah, reported that she had been away from home for several weeks and briefly went out to usher in the New Year upon her return.

When she came back, she found the house on fire, with all property destroyed. She further reported that she had previously received threats from a man known to her.

Owoyesigyire said preliminary inquiries indicate that there had been ongoing domestic disagreements. Police visited and documented the scene, recorded statements from the complainant and witnesses, and recovered exhibits to support the investigations.

Efforts are ongoing to trace and interview the suspect. Police are treating both cases as arson, and investigations are continuing. Further updates will be provided as inquiries progress.
