Police Investigate Death of 54-Year-Old Man in Kanungu

The police in Kanungu District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Eric Ndamiye, 54, a resident of Nyakagyezi Cell, Eastern Ward, Butogota Town Council.

According to ASP Elly Maate, the PRO Kigezi Region, the deceased, who was reportedly a known drunkard, was last seen on the evening of October 26, 2025, drinking at a bar owned by Niwamanya Gift in Nyakagyezi Trading Centre.

The following morning, October 27, 2025, residents heading to their gardens discovered Ndamiye’s body lying along a footpath leading to his home, just a few metres from the bar where he had been drinking.

Maate says the body had visible finger marks around the neck, indicating signs of violence and suggesting he was strangled.

Police were notified, and a team visited and documented the scene. A sniffer dog was introduced, but the scene had already been tampered with before the police’s arrival.

A postmortem examination was conducted at the scene by medical personnel from Mpungu Health Centre IV, after which the body was handed over to relatives for burial.

Maate told reporters that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible so they can be charged accordingly.
