Police Investigate Death of 17-Year-Old Student in Rukiga

The police in Rukiga District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 17-year-old Edward Mugarura, a student at Kihanga Secondary School.

Mugarura’s body was discovered along the road in Nyakatugunda Village, Nyarurambi Parish, Rwamucucu Sub-county, on 17th December 2025.

Preliminary reports indicate that on 16th December, at around 10:00 p.m., Mugarura was at the bar of Ampumuza Gerald in Sindi Ward, Mparo Town Council, consuming alcohol with friends. He reportedly left the bar to return home, but some youths, known to the bar attendant, followed him on a motorcycle while smoking cigarettes.

His body was found the following morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. The Officer-in-Charge of Mparo was immediately notified, followed by the Rukiga Chief of Police. The scene was visited, processed, and documented.

According to Elly Maate, the Police Regional Officer (PRO) for Kigezi, the body exhibited back bruises and a swollen head, indicating possible assault. A police canine unit from Kabale traced the scent from the scene for approximately two kilometers, leading back to Ampumuza Gerald’s bar.

Seven individuals, including the bar owner and attendants, have been arrested to assist with investigations. The body has been recovered and taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for further examination.
