Police Investigate Attempted Murder of Rukungiri LC V Aspirant
Police in Rukungiri are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attempted murder of Angello Twinomuhangi, an independent candidate for Rukungiri District LC V Chairperson, who was found tied up and unconscious after being abandoned at Minera Bridge in Nyarushanje Sub-county on 06 January 2026 at about 21:00 hours.
It is alleged that on the same date at around 21:30 hours, Byamukama Alphonse, the Head Teacher of St. Jerome Secondary School, Ndama, was driving from Nyarushanje Sub-county towards Rukungiri Town when, before reaching Minera Bridge, he was stopped by a boda boda rider. The rider alerted him to a person who had been tied up and dumped next to a stationary motor vehicle, registration number UA 257BH, white in colour.
Upon approaching the scene, Byamukama observed that the victim had a handkerchief tied across his mouth and his arms bound behind his back with suspected USB cables. He raised an alarm, which attracted other responders who identified the victim as Angello Twinomuhangi, an independent candidate for the position of LC V Chairperson for Rukungiri District in the 2026 General Elections.
According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, officers from Kebisoni Police Station were alerted and promptly responded to the scene. The victim was found unconscious and was rescued and transported in his own vehicle to Nyakibale Hospital for medical treatment.
A case of attempted murder was registered at Kebisoni Police Station. A team led by SSP Brian Ampaire, the Rukungiri District Police Commander (DPC), visited and documented the scene. Statements were recorded from key witnesses, and exhibits, namely two handkerchiefs and two suspected USB cables, were recovered. The victim’s motor vehicle, registration number UA 527BH, was removed from the scene and driven to Rukungiri Police Station for further examination and analysis.
Police say efforts to trace and identify the suspects are ongoing, to arrest and prosecute them in courts of law.
