Police Hunt for Ibanda High School Head Teacher Over Fatal Hit-and-Run

Police in Ibanda are hunting for Ayebare Medard, the head teacher of Ibanda High School, in connection with the fatal hit-and-run crash of a 7-year-old child.

The incident occurred on February 10, 2025, when Ayebare allegedly struck and killed Mugume Herbert, a 7-year-old pupil of Nyabuhikye Church of Uganda School, while speeding along the Ibanda-Mbarara Road at Nyabuhikye Trading Center.

SP Kananura Michael, the CLO-Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, stated that following the incident, the suspect abandoned his vehicle at Kanoni Police Station in Kazo and fled the scene.

The vehicle was later towed to Ibanda Police Station, where it remains parked for further investigation.

Kananura appealed to members of the public who may have information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in bringing him to justice.

According to SP Kananura, police recorded multiple crashes last week involving vulnerable road users, especially school-going children and pedestrians.

Speaking to reporters at Naguru Police Headquarters during the weekly press briefing on Monday morning, he noted that the majority of these cases were hit-and-run incidents caused by speeding.

“As a crucial reminder to all drivers, it is essential to understand your duties in the event of a crash, as stipulated in the Traffic and Road Safety Act, CAP 347, Section 114. It states that you must stop immediately and provide your name, address, and the name and address of the vehicle’s owner. If you fear for your safety, report the crash to the nearest police station or police officer,” Kananura urged.

Any person who fails to comply with the provisions of this section commits an offence and, upon conviction, is liable to a fine of not less than five currency points and not exceeding 30 currency points. A currency point is equivalent to UGX 20,000.
