Police in Kajjansi are holding Ainembabazi Joshua, a 22-year-old resident of Bukerere Village in Mukono Town Council, Mukono District, over alleged theft of motor vehicle number plates.
Police say that between the nights of January 20 and 24, 2026, the suspect allegedly stole 14 vehicle number plates from cars parked in Akright City, Kajjansi Town Council, Wakiso District.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the suspect was arrested on January 25, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Sonde, Mukono District.
Preliminary investigations indicate that after removing the number plates, the suspect would allegedly demand between UGX 100,000 and UGX 200,000 from the victims before revealing where the stolen plates had been hidden.
SP Kawala said some of the stolen number plates have since been recovered, while efforts to trace and recover the remaining ones are ongoing.
She advised members of the public against paying money to suspected criminals and urged them to report such incidents to the police for appropriate action.
