Police Arrest Suspect for Impersonating Senior Officers in Kampala

Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested Elangu Eride Pius for allegedly impersonating senior police officers, including SP Opio Patrick, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Jinja Road Police Division.

SSP Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, told the media that the suspect used phone calls and WhatsApp messages through an MTN number, 0762834001, to falsely present himself as SP Opio and other senior officers. He reportedly targeted prominent individuals, including Vincent Wei, Managing Director of CHINT Uganda; Nanshemeza Lorren, of Lakhan Auto Centre; and Kakonge David, a businessman in the Industrial Area.

Investigations indicate that Elangu demanded meetings with his victims and allegedly solicited money, instructing them to send funds to 0702599905. Police confirmed that some of the impersonated officers’ identities are being withheld for security reasons.

Following his arrest, the suspect’s mobile phone was recovered and has since been sent for forensic analysis. Police have advised anyone defrauded using the cited numbers to report to Jinja Road Police Division for assistance.

Onyango warned the public to remain vigilant against such scams.

“If you have been targeted by such fraudsters, please report promptly to the nearest police station. Always verify the credentials of individuals claiming to be officials, and exercise caution with unsolicited demands for money,” Onyango emphasised.
