Police Arrest Several NUP Supporters in Crackdown on Election Violence

The Uganda Police Force has warned that they will arrest anyone who engages in electoral violence as presidential campaigns continue across the country.

The warning comes after the arrest of several supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in connection with what the police termed as a series of violent incidents reported during the ongoing presidential campaigns across different parts of the country.

In a statement issued on Friday by Police spokesperson CP Kituuma Rusoke, the arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown on election-related violence targeting individuals accused of assaulting officers, destroying government property, and obstructing law enforcement operations.

According to the statement, while the campaign trail for presidential candidates has largely remained peaceful, a small number of individuals have persistently provoked security personnel and engaged in acts of violence.

“These actions include damaging police vehicles, assaulting personnel, causing public disorder, and the inconsiderate use of public roads. Such conduct is unacceptable and will have consequences,” CP Kituuma said.

Police cited several incidents involving NUP supporters:

In Busia District, police allege that suspects travelling in a NUP convoy allegedly assaulted a police officer. A case was registered at Busia Central Police Station under CRB 1038/2025. That in Mayuge District, on October 3, an officer was attacked and seriously injured during a campaign event. His phone was stolen, and the case was filed under Mayuge CRB 797/2025.

They further claim that on October 8, during a rally at Bikoma Primary School in Kyankwanzi District, a detective constable was assaulted. Police rescued him, though the main suspect escaped in the crowd.

In Kakumiro District, on October 21, the windshield of a police vehicle was damaged in Kisiita Town Council.

On October 28, in Alebtong District, police officers following behind the NUP presidential candidate’s convoy were attacked. Their vehicle’s tyres were punctured, and property was stolen. The next day, October 29, in Abim District, a group of NUP candidate bodyguards allegedly assaulted one Edibu Emmanuel, who was later hospitalised.

On November 5, in Kiruhura District, NUP supporters reportedly assaulted a journalist working with Tayari Television.

CP Kituuma confirmed that several arrests were made on November 7 in Mbarara District, targeting individuals with known criminal records linked to assault, vandalism, and obstruction of police officers on duty.

He emphasised that not all participants in the political campaigns engage in unlawful behaviour, but those who choose violence will face accountability.

“Police action is directed only at those who, by choice, repeatedly confront officers and incite violence,” he clarified.

The Uganda Police Force reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all presidential candidates and maintaining peace during the campaign season.

“We remain steadfast in safeguarding all candidates but will not tolerate criminality or disorder. Candidates are cautioned against engaging in violence. Anyone who chooses this path will be held personally accountable,” CP Kituuma stated.

He further urged all political actors to conduct themselves responsibly, respect the law, and adhere to campaign guidelines issued by the Electoral Commission and other regulatory agencies.
