Parents Advised to Escort Pupils Amid Defilement, Kidnapping Concerns
Parents have been urged to escort their children, especially those in lower primary and the girl child, to and from school to prevent cases of defilement, kidnapping, and other forms of abuse.
While addressing the weekly security press conference, Police Spokesperson CP Kituuma Rusoke said police have in the past registered cases of defilement and the disappearance of children, many of which could have been prevented through closer parental supervision.
He emphasised that, where possible, juveniles should always be escorted by a responsible adult. He also cautioned against children moving very early in the morning or late in the evening and encouraged the use of main routes, with pupils advised to walk in groups.
According to CP Kituuma, police observations indicate that most violations of children’s rights occur when children are isolated, particularly when walking alone at odd hours.
He further advised parents to regularly check their children’s luggage, noting that some pupils have been found carrying illicit drugs to school.
CP Kituuma also called on parents to disclose any health conditions their children may have to school authorities to prevent fatal incidents, some of which have been recorded in the past.
He additionally urged parents to formally register with schools the individuals authorised to drop off and pick up their children daily. He said this measure is particularly important in cases of domestic misunderstandings, where schools are not clearly informed about who is responsible for collecting a child.
On the side of school proprietors, CP Kituuma advised the establishment of clear registration protocols requiring both parents’ details before a child is released.
He also called for thorough safety checks in schools before opening to prevent accidents that could result in serious injury or death.
CP Kituuma further advised financial institutions to encourage the use of digital payment platforms to minimize cases of theft at their premises.
Schools across the country will officially reopen for the 2026 academic year tomorrow, 10th February 2026.
