Over 2,000 Lives Lost in Road Crashes This Year, Police Launch Festive Season Crackdown

Fatalities from road traffic crashes increased by 5.7% between January and June 2024, with a total of 2,042 reported deaths.

SP Kananura Michael, Spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, highlighted that pedestrians and motorcyclists—particularly boda riders and passengers—remain the most vulnerable groups.

During last year’s festive season, nearly 60 lives were lost between December 23, 2023, and January 1, 2024. “In response to this trend, we have begun implementing several measures aimed at enhancing road safety during the festive season, with some already underway and others set to start soon,” said Kananura.

Kananura revealed that 76 drivers have so far been arrested at various checkpoints across the country. While some have been taken to court, others received expert penalties.

He warned that operations targeting speeding, reckless driving, and other major offences responsible for road carnage are being intensified. “Reckless driving, particularly unsafe overtaking, has consistently contributed to many road crashes,” Kananura emphasized.

Additionally, he urged bus drivers to obtain badges from the Ministry of Transport and display them prominently during trips, complete with their photos.

The police aim to curtail road traffic incidents with these enhanced measures, ensuring a safer festive season for all.
