Kyagulanyi Masaka Campaign Rallies Peaceful Amid Deadly Road Accident
A series of road incidents marred an otherwise peaceful day of campaign rallies for Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu in Masaka City, leaving one person dead and several others injured, police have confirmed.
According to the Regional Police spokesperson, SP Kasirye Twaha, the first rally held at Saza Grounds concluded without major security concerns. However, a fatal accident occurred along the Masaka–Mbarara highway near Kiyovu Bar, just a few meters from Welcome Roundabout.
The incident involved a Toyota Hiace, registration number UBJ 523N, silver grey in colour, driven by Gateera Micheal, 33, a resident of Kyengera. Police say the driver, who was reportedly excited as he joined the National Unity Platform (NUP) convoy, collided with a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, UDN 172Y, ridden by Semaganda Sula, 39, of Kyalusowe, Masaka City.
The crash left the motorcycle passenger, Sekidde Peter, 39, a resident of Nyendo, Masaka, dead on the spot. The rider sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
Police confirmed that the body of the deceased was taken to Masaka Regional Hospital mortuary for a postmortem. At the same time, the driver of the Toyota Hiace was arrested and detained at Masaka Central Police Station. The vehicle was also impounded and taken to Masaka Police Station pending further investigations.
A second rally held at Kyajjubira also ended peacefully, though another road incident was recorded during the return journey. An unidentified rider on a motorcycle, UFY 005C, reportedly carrying three passengers, rammed into a police patrol vehicle, UP 0325T Toyota Hilux. The motorcycle, which was speeding at the time, severely damaged the vehicle’s left door and side mirror.
The rider, who remains unidentified, was critically injured and was rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital. Police say investigations into the incident are underway.
Twaha said the overall security situation remains calm and normal despite the unfortunate accidents.
