One arrested as UPDF Brigadier is summoned for Wetland degradation

NEMA enforcement officials have arrested Mr Ian Paul Mugabi under SD Ref 15/05/08/2023 for the offence of wetland degradation involving backfilling and water stream diversion.

The arrest was executed on the 5th of August 2023 in the Nakiyanja Zone of Namugongo Nsonde Ward, Ggoma Division in Mukono. The case revolves around the encroachment on nearly 2 acres of vital wetland area.

A drainage channel had been constructed to obstruct and redirect water flow. However, NEMA intervened, halting the activity in its tracks.

As part of the evidence collection process, a range of building materials, including 5 spades, 1 hoe, 4 meters of DPC, and 6 wheelbarrows, were seized from the scene and transferred to the exhibit store.

Meanwhile, the authority has also summoned Brigadier Mussaja-Waza. This action was taken after security officers, on-site at Makenke Zone of Gayaza Ward, Kasangati Town Council in Wakiso District confirmed that he held ownership of approximately 1.5 acres of the degraded wetland.

In addition, an excavator registration number UBA 871D was discovered at the site.
