NUP lawyers denied access to party members held in Kalangala, Masaka Districts

The National Unity Platform Party members who were arrested from Kalangala have been denied access to lawyers.

According to the party presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi and police, some of their members are being held in Kalangala and others in Masaka districts.

This morning, Kyagulanyi said the party legal offices were working around the clock to get the others cleared and removed from jail.

However, he noted that the lawyers went to the holding cells in the two districts but were denied access.

“Our Comrades who were arrested from Kalangala and later transferred to Masaka Central Police Station yesterday, are still being held incommunicado. They have been denied access to their Lawyers and next of Kin, a clear violation of their fundamental rights” Kyagulanyi said.

He added that the party leadership has established that eighteen (18) of the group members have since been moved to an unknown place.

“Preliminary information indicates they are being held at the headquarters of the UPDF Armored Brigade, which is commanded by the infamous partisan Brig Sande. These are innocent Citizens whose only Crime is not supporting Dictator Museveni” Kyagulanyi said.

The Party president noted that their Legal Team and Party Leaders are working around the clock to secure the freedom of their members.

“We demand for the un-conditional immediate release of our Comrades, and an end to harassment of our supporters” he warned.

At least 90 people were arrested in Kalangala on Wednesday where Kyagulanyi had gone to hold campaign meetings. He was however arrested upon arrival at the islands together with his campaign team.
