New Year 2026 Fireworks: Police Issue Guidelines and Public Safety Advisory

The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has released guidelines governing the display of fireworks across the country as Ugandans usher in the New Year 2026.

Each year, police receive requests from hotels, entertainment centres, places of worship, and other institutions seeking permission to conduct fireworks displays. These requests are approved through licensed blasters who are authorised to carry out the displays on behalf of successful applicants.

Speaking at a press conference held at Police Headquarters in Naguru on Monday morning, the Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Kituuma Rusoke, stressed that the guidelines must be strictly observed during all fireworks displays.

ACP Kituuma explained that fireworks shall only be discharged by a licensed blaster representing an approved applicant. He added that all fireworks displays must be publicly advertised in both electronic and print media, particularly local FM radio stations and newspapers, prior to the event.

According to the guidelines, the duration of any fireworks display shall not exceed five (05) minutes from the time of the first blast. He further noted that Counter Terrorism (CT) Police officers will escort fireworks materials and supervise the displays in collaboration with respective District Police Commanders (DPCs) to ensure security and public safety.

“CT Police officers and DPCs conduct a prior inspection of all venues to confirm their suitability for fireworks displays. Area DPCs reserve the authority to stop any fireworks display that does not comply with these guidelines. Any unused fireworks materials shall only be handled by a person holding a valid explosives blaster’s (fireworks) licence,” ACP Kituuma said.

He warned that failure to comply with the guidelines may result in the immediate termination of the display, either before or during the event, and may attract further appropriate action.

ACP Kituuma also cautioned members of the public against burning tyres while celebrating the New Year, noting that the practice damages infrastructure, especially roads. He further warned licensed firearm holders against firing shots into the air during celebrations, saying this poses serious risks to public safety.

For emergencies, the police have provided the following toll-free lines: 0800 199 699, 0707 600 773 (Airtel), 0776 999 136 (MTN), and 0800 121 222, which can be used to report fire and other emergencies.

“The Uganda Police Force, together with other security agencies, remains committed to ensuring a safe, peaceful, and enjoyable festive season for all. We call upon the public to celebrate responsibly, remain vigilant, and work together to keep our communities safe,” he said.
