National Ozone Contest Returns for Season Two

The National Ozone Contest returns for its second edition today, August 26, 2025, promising even more excitement, competition, and innovation. The contest, the first of its kind in Uganda, Africa, and globally, was launched last year as a bold initiative by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) under the leadership of its Executive Director, Dr. Barirega Akankwasah.

Will Makerere, KIU Defend Titles?

Last year’s contest crowned Makerere University as champions in the female category (Ms. Ozone 2024/2025) and Kampala International University (KIU) as winners in the male category (Mr. Ozone 2024/2025). Both institutions now return to defend their prestigious titles against an even larger pool of challengers. Other standout performers from the inaugural edition included Soroti University, which took first runner-up in the female category, Makerere University again as second runner-up in the same category, and Busitema University, which impressively claimed both the first and second runner-up positions in the male category.

This year, with more universities and students expected to join, the stage is set for a more competitive showdown. Will Makerere and KIU defend their crowns, or will new champions emerge to claim the coveted Mr. and Ms. Ozone trophies? The nation waits in anticipation.

Purpose of Contest

Beyond the pageantry and competition, the National Ozone Contest serves a vital purpose: testing and strengthening students’ knowledge of ozone layer protection and broader environmental issues. For years, NEMA has often been perceived as focusing solely on wetlands management. However, through this initiative, the Authority is showcasing its wider mandate, particularly in protecting the ozone layer – one of the most fragile components of the environment.

Thanks to Uganda’s robust interventions in ozone layer protection, spearheaded by NEMA, the country has so far been spared the devastating consequences of ozone depletion, such as increased cases of eye cataracts and skin cancers. The contest is therefore not just a battle for trophies, but also a platform to nurture the next generation of environmental stewards.

Sponsorship

The event is being organized in partnership with Vision Group and Bank of Uganda, institutions that have joined NEMA in recognising the importance of environmental education, youth engagement, and innovation.

As the contest unfolds, eyes across the country – and indeed beyond – will be fixed on the universities and students vying for glory. Season Two of the National Ozone Contest promises not only entertainment and competition but also a deepened commitment to protecting the planet’s delicate ozone shield.
