Museveni Awaits Nomination Tomorrow as Kyagulanyi Slams EC Over Date Change

The Presidential flagbearer for the National Unity Platform (NUP) political party, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of working with the ruling NRM government to frustrate his nomination bid scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September 2025, as earlier requested.

According to Kyagulanyi, the party had written to the EC booking Tuesday as their nomination day, but this request was turned down. Instead, they were pushed to Wednesday, 24th September 2025, at 2:00 pm.

Earlier, the EC had rejected NUP’s nomination papers on grounds that the candidate had not collected the required signatures, a matter the party rectified within a few hours.

“As predicted by many Ugandans, the ridiculous claims about us not submitting enough signatures were intended to push our date of nomination. The cowardly regime did not want us to be nominated on the same day as Museveni! Well, they just gave us our certificate confirming that we have submitted the signatures, but pushed our nomination from Tuesday, 23rd, to Wednesday, 24th September at 2:00 pm,” Kyagulanyi wrote on social media.

The opposition leader added that NUP had initially booked Tuesday at 10:00 am for their nomination.

“Pushing it to 2:00 pm is clearly intended to frustrate our plans to have two rallies because the first one was meant to begin at midday. Since we know how they normally behave, as soon as they started those stories, we moved ahead of them and booked both Katwe Grounds and Kaala Playground (Nateete) for both dates! Nothing will stop the revolutionary cause!” he added.

Meanwhile, the NUP party received a letter from the Uganda Police Force instructing them to hold only one rally, at Kaala Playground, Nateete, instead of Katwe Grounds, which police said was not suitable for a large gathering.

“This is to inform you that a safety and security assessment was made in respect to the two venues. The first venue (i.e. Katwe Playground in Makindye Division) was found unsuitable for a political rally due to its proximity to Katwe Market and several other businesses. The venue is also under a high-voltage powerline, close to the busy Queensway section of Entebbe Road, and is crossed by a railway line. However, the second venue was found suitable,” reads part of the letter issued today, 22nd September 2025, by Okoshi Simon Peter, on behalf of the IGP.

Police further instructed the NUP leader to secure necessary clearances from the venue management and local authorities, and to provide proof to the Commander Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP). They also directed the party to observe all aspects of public order requirements, strictly adhere to traffic laws and regulations, put in place appropriate measures for public health and safety—including emergency medical services—and avoid any processions, as these may interfere with traffic flow and other businesses along the routes to and from the venue.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the flagbearer of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), will tomorrow, Tuesday, 23rd September 2025, become the first presidential candidate to be nominated for the 2026 General Elections.

According to the Electoral Commission (EC), the nomination exercise will take place at the Commission’s Head Office Grounds, Plot 2508, Lubowa, Kigo-Lweza Road, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District. The process will run from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on both scheduled days.

The EC has further advised all aspirants to present a proposed campaign schedule, with the official campaign period set to commence on 29th September 2025. The schedules, the Commission noted, will help in the smooth harmonisation of candidates’ activities once nominations are complete.
