Multi-Award-Winning Ugandan Filmmaker Nazzinda Ruth Unveils New Documentary on Lupus Awareness
The Bosch Alumni Network (BAN) Uganda Initiative has announced a public gathering and screening of the short documentary “Shining a Light on Lupus”, slated for Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Busabala Cinema Gear House in Kampala. The event will run from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The initiative, coordinated by BAN Regional Coordinators Nazzinda Ruth and Derrick Mpagi, aims to raise national awareness about Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), a chronic autoimmune disease that remains largely misunderstood and stigmatised in Uganda.
Supported by the Bosch Alumni Network and the International Alumni Centre (IAC) Berlin, the event is part of a wider campaign using creative storytelling, dialogue, and visual advocacy to combat misinformation and discrimination faced by people living with lupus.
The awareness project is being implemented through Bitone Art Reels (BAREEL) and Might Foundation (MIGHT), two organizations involved in community health advocacy and patient support.
Speaking ahead of the event, filmmaker and impact producer Nazzinda Ruth said the documentary seeks to humanise the lived experiences of Ugandans battling lupus.
“Through this project, we are turning pain into purpose. Derrick’s story reflects the courage of many Ugandans living with lupus in silence. With the support of the Bosch Alumni Network and IAC Berlin, we’re using film and media to bring visibility, empathy, and action to those affected,” Nazzinda noted.
Co-coordinator Derrick Mpagi, who also lives with lupus, has built a strong advocacy presence through Might Foundation. He emphasised the importance of early diagnosis, mental health support, and community awareness in improving the lives of patients.
The gathering will include:
- A screening of the documentary followed by a moderated discussion;
- Community dialogue sessions featuring patients, advocates, and alumni;
- A creative networking space for BAN Uganda members and partners;
- Distribution of character support items, including sunscreen for lupus patients, a key component of symptom management;
- Photo and video documentation to highlight impact stories and learning moments.
