Motorcycles Restricted, Diversions in Place as Presidential Nominations Begin Tomorrow

The Uganda Police Force has released a traffic and security management plan ahead of the 2026 Presidential nomination exercise, scheduled for 23rd and 24th September 2025 at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Lubowa, Wakiso District.

According to the Electoral Commission roadmap, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM flagbearer, together with other aspiring candidates, will be formally nominated by the EC Chairperson during the two-day event.

SP Michael Kananura, PRO Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, told the media this evening that police have outlined specific routes, diversions, and parking arrangements to ensure smooth traffic flow.

After the nomination, Museveni will hold a rally at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

The main traffic flow to the nomination venue will follow this route:

  • City centre → Yusuf Lule Road → Mulago traffic lights → City Mortuary traffic lights → Kubiri traffic lights → Bwaise flyover → Northern Bypass → Busega roundabout → Kajjansi flyover → Old Entebbe Road → Lweza Fuelex → Kigo Road junction → EC Headquarters, Lubowa.

While candidates will park at the main nomination venue, other guests will use St. Joseph’s Church of Uganda, Lweza.

Traffic Diversions

Kananura noted that diversions will be enforced only if the need arises, at:

  • Kisubi: Traffic diverted to Nakawuka Road to ease congestion on Entebbe Highway.
  • Kajjansi flyover: Vehicles diverted to the Munyonyo Spur into the city centre.
  • Lweza Fuelex Kigo Junction: Motorists from Kampala diverted to Kajjansi flyover.
  • Kigo Rehabilitation Centre Junction: Diversion for candidates exiting after nomination via Kigo Road.
  • Kigo Furniture: Motorists entering Kigo Road are diverted to continue on Munyonyo Spur/Kajjansi Express.

Residents in affected areas will be allowed access using special stickers provided by the security team.

Meanwhile, traffic police will regulate movement at junctions and access roads, holding vehicles 50 metres away from sensitive points.

Kananure says that all diversions will begin at 5:00 am on both 23rd and 24th September until the end of the exercise.

Motorcycles (boda bodas) will not be allowed beyond the designated cut-off points. He warned that those who violate these guidelines will face consequences under traffic laws and regulations.

He urged members of the public to obey instructions from traffic and security officers, ensure vehicle stickers are clearly displayed for identification, exercise patience and discipline throughout the nomination exercise, and plan journeys early to avoid delays and inconveniences.
