Military police officer shoots estranged lover, turns gun on himself too

Police in Katwe are investigating circumstances under which a military police officer shot and killed his estranged girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.

The murder-suicide incident occurred on the morning of February 20, 2024. Preliminary investigations indicate that Corporal Andebo Collins, a military police officer stationed at Makindye Military Police, and Atulinda Peroni, a civilian support staff also affiliated with the military police, were involved.

The duo previously in a relationship and shared a residence in Lusaka Zone, Makindye 1, Makindye Division, until their separation due to conflicts.

It is reported that at around 07:00 hours this morning, Corporal Andebo, armed with an AK-47 rifle and disguised in civilian clothing, confronted Atulinda Peroni as she attempted to board a motorcycle (boda boda).

He fired upon her, sustaining a severe arm injury. Following this, Corporal Andebo turned the weapon on himself, leading to his death upon arrival at Mulago Hospital’s casualty ward.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy PRO for Kampala Metropolitan Police, officers from Katwe Police Station and the Military Police responded to the scene. The victim was rushed to Nsambya Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Her body has been transferred to City Mortuary Mulago for postmortem examination.

Investigations have revealed a history of relationship issues spanning five years between the duo. The firearm used in the incident was recovered, along with 13 cartridges.

Inquiries are ongoing to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Statements have been obtained from witnesses to aid in the investigation.
