Man Suffocates to Death After Falling into Fuel Tank

Residents of Nyakatugunda village in Kamuganguzi Sub County, Kabale District, are mourning their neighbour, identified as Kyoro Nazario Twebaze, who fell into a tank filled with fuel and suffocated to death.

According to Elly Maate, the police PRO for the Kigezi Region, the incident occurred on Sunday, 23rd March 2025, when an unknown rider arrived at Twebaze’s home with a plastic tank filled with petrol, loaded onto a tri-cycle with registration No. UGA 838R.

It is alleged that the tri-cycle developed a mechanical issue, prompting the rider to leave it at Twebaze’s residence for safekeeping. Maate reports that at 2215 hours, while Twebaze was asleep in his house, he heard voices outside and assumed someone was attempting to steal the fuel from the tank, leading him to go outside to confront the suspected thieves.

In the process, he climbed on top of the tank to check if any fuel remained, but accidentally slipped and fell inside, resulting in suffocation and instant death.

The scene was visited by the District Police Commander and the District CID Officer of Kabale, along with the area Officer in Charge and a team of police officers.

Maate stated that a case of sudden death was filed, and the deceased’s body was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The tri-cycle with the fuel tank has been secured for further investigation.
