Magistrate, Resident State Attorney remanded to Luzira over Corruption
In a shocking turn of events, the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has remanded Mitooma Chief Magistrate Sylvia Nvanungi and Sembabule Resident State Attorney Jacqueline Bako, over alleged corruption charges.
Facing a total of eight counts, Bako is implicated in all charges, while Nvanungi is linked to a single count, stemming from their time in public service roles.
These charges, pertaining to their tenure in the Sembabule Chief Magistrate office, revolve around disturbing allegations of soliciting Shillings 2.5 million in gratification from the relatives of suspects back in April 2023.
This purported exchange was allegedly tied to bail arrangements or the alteration of charge sheets. Franco Mulangwa is accused of contributing Shillings 1.48 million to this questionable arrangement, according to the prosecution.
The accused duo, maintaining their innocence, entered not guilty pleas and sought bail during their appearance before Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro. However, the court, citing a lack of credible sureties, rejected their plea.
Nvanungi, grappling with health issues and familial responsibilities, passionately appealed for her release, but the court, emphasizing inadequate documentation from proposed sureties, denied her bail.
With emotions running high, the court, led by Aciro, extended the remand of both individuals until November 23rd, 2023, advising them to file a second bail application if they wish. Stanley Baine, representing the prosecution, revealed ongoing investigations and vehemently opposed bail for the accused.
The arrest of Nvanungi and Bako was executed by detectives from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, promptly bringing them to court after they reported as summoned to face trial.
