Lightning Kills Five in Ntungamo District

Tragedy has struck Rwakashanga Cell, Rwahi Town Council in Ntungamo District, where five people lost their lives after being struck by lightning.

The incident occurred at around 5:00 p.m. on 19th August 2025 during a heavy downpour.

The deceased were identified as Taremwa Edgar (38), Nduhukire Jackline (44), and Mwaka Alexander (25). Two other victims, both male adults aged between 30 and 50 years and believed to be residents of Ruhaama in Ntungamo District, remain unidentified.

According to SP Kasasira Samson, the Police PRO for Rwizi Region, it is alleged that earlier that morning, eight people had gone to dig in gardens in Ruhwabwoba and Kidede, both located in Rwakashanga Cell, Rwentobo, Rwahi Town Council.

At about 5:00 p.m., a heavy downpour forced the group to take shelter on the verandah of a nearby home, as the doors were locked. While they waited for the rain to stop, lightning struck, killing five people instantly.

Four bodies have since been identified and handed over to their families for burial, while the unidentified body remains at Itojo Hospital mortuary.
