Lake Bunyonyi Claims Two Children in Separate Drowning Incidents

Two children have drowned in Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale District. The deceased are Immaculate Atuheire, a five-year-old Top Class pupil at Holy Trinity Preparatory School Hamuhambo in Rubanda District, and Ronald Asiimwe, 11 years old.

According to Aggrey Bandebaho, the LCIII Chairperson of Hamuhambo Town Council, the children drowned on Sunday. It is reported that Atuheire was playing in a canoe at Kavumu shores when it capsized. Bandebaho says that the body was retrieved by locals on Monday.

On the same day, Ronald Asiimwe, 11, drowned after the canoe he was sailing in capsized. According to his uncle, Patrick Kwatiromunda, Asiimwe and his elder brother had been told to graze goats. While in the fields, they started sailing in the canoe that had been docked on the shore.

Meanwhile, on August 4, 2024, Ignatius Akandiinda, a Senior One student at Lake Bunyonyi Secondary School, drowned. Akandiinda was returning from Katiba Village, where he had gone to cut grass to feed cows.

The small local canoe he was using became uncontrollable and capsized, leading to his drowning.
